21.00 Thomas Thiery & Szabolcs Veres Duo (FR-H)
Visual artist Szabolcs Veres transforms images into sounds which then he first combines into short sequences and afterwards into a coherent whole. Thomas Thiery manoeuvres his improvised music with different sensors and controllers. Their cooperative work will premiere in Szeged.
21.30 S8 Improv Collective (H)
For the three-year-old improvised music collective, there are seldom any previously defined thematic guidelines. How the members play their instruments is characterised rather by thoroughly mapping out the sounds of the objects at their disposal as well as by building ad hoc musical structures, and by playing enthusiastically, with these sounds. Their performances are accompanied by Super 8 visuals by Szilárd Szokol.

The duo of Srđan Muc (guitar, electronics) and Róbert Rózsa (no-input mixing board, selected objects) is an important factor in the Balkan’s improvised music scene, with the musicians being the members of the Switzerland-Balkan creative music axis.

Grencsó Kollektíva
Saxophonist István Grencsó is one of the most prominent musicians in Hungary with his free musical spirit, independent way of thinking and his unique relationship with his instrument. The band’s music is more and more based on collective improvisation and experimenting.

Izabella Füzi
Born in 1976 in Kézdivásárhely (Romania). Earned her PhD in 2004. Received Erasmus, Ceepus and post-doctoral scholarships during her studies as well as the Zoltán Kanyó Literary Award in 2005. Associate professor since 2007. Head of Film Theory and Film History programme at Szeged University. Founder and editor-in-chief of the film journal Apertúra since 2005. Her research includes the comparative analysis of narration in film and in literature, language philosophy and rhetoric, as well as film theoretical questions on mediality and on the construction of the spectator’s subject.
Dr Ervin Török
Associate professor at the Film and Literary Theory Department Group at Szeged University. Has extensively published on films by Orson Welles, Gábor Bódy and András Jeles as well as on satire in film. With Izabella Füzi, co-authored ’Introduction into the Analysis of Epic Texts and Narrative Films’, a guidebook for university students.
Zoltán János Tóth
Guest lecturer at the Film Theory and Film History programme at Szeged University. Earned his PhD at the Theory and Interpretation programme at Szeged University. His research fields include visual culture, film theory, theories of the body and visual anthropology.

The war-cry of the warriors of light:
’1 and 0 for you! Super 8 for me!’
In our world, which has been digitalised into a zombie, more and more people reach back to the analogue world. But what do we call analogue? The word comes from the Greek ‘analogos’, which means’ well-proportioned’, ‘adequate’, ‘similar’. We can also grasp the essence of analogue filmmaking here, because it captures light in a way that is the most adequate for the human eye.
A handful of people have been struggling for eight years now to keep making film on celluloid alive in this corner of the world, too. Luckily, their expectations have been fulfilled, so today they are fighting, hand in hand with Super 8 activists from all over the continent, on the battlefields of the media universe, on barricades erected from discoloured monitors. In Europe, from Szeged through London to Cambridge, there exists today a Super 8 culture with an analogue basis. We can definitely say that the Szeged tribe camp is one of the most important settlements of the last Super 8 Mohicans.
This year the festival, celebrating its 8th anniversary, will, as usual, coincide with vintage, in the second week of September. We have already started to ‘harvest’ the films: we have received works from all over the world, from the US, from Australia as well as from almost every European country, and even from Taiwan. The pre-selection committee is selecting the competition programme from about 400 films. We are especially pleased that more and more Hungarian filmmakers send in their films as the years pass, and that you can also detect the special taste of Hungary here – a taste that makes our culture unique.
This year, the festival events will, as usual, include surprising performances, real musical treats and exhibitions as well as great parties till sunrise.

The Super 8 Movement and Festival in Szeged, Hungary
The evolution of film culture has reached a stage which can be characterized by the renaissance of old techniques. Professional filmmakers never gave up using simple technologies, and low-budget systems sometimes prove to be a more suitable device of artistic expression.
The techniques and technologies Super 8 filmmaking uses make it a special category within filmmaking. It is little known today that the basis of home filmmaking was Super 8. Super 8 culture has spread through Western Europe in the past decades, several film clubs and festivals are a proof of its popularity.
Both in Hungary and abroad, mainly film workshops in university clubs and smaller film festivals popularize Super 8 film culture. Luckily, owing to the post-modern nature of modern visual culture, lovers of film are open to everything, and the base of Super 8 is becoming wider.
Over the last 8 years Szeged has become the capital of Super 8 film culture in Hungary. The Szeged Super 8 group has been collecting films in Hungary since 2000. Today films are arriving even from abroad to be saved and archived. More than 170 hours of film material, from 1941 to 2008; from cartoons through to documentary are to be digitalized and categorized.
Future plans include setting up an open archive on the Internet in which film collections will be available in different categories. It will be a filmmaker’s catalogue (of ads, of art films, etc.) from which interested parties will have the opportunity to apply for a license to use the films or part of them. This virtual archive will also be a kind of Noah’s ark for memories recorded on 8mm wide celluloid. In order to preserve such memories, it is the films which must be rescued. And the guys with this mission are the Memory Rescue Team.
